Acetazolamide For Horses, Dogs and Cats

Acetazolamide is a prescription required, generic tablet based, pet medication with diuretic properties that is prescribed to treat horses, dogs and cats.
In horses, acetazolamide is used for hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP), a condition characterized by a rise in potassium levels. Equine HYPP can lead to weakness and muscle tremors. Acetazolamide does not cure this condition but helps reduce symptoms by ridding the body of excess fluids and potassium.
In pets, acetazolamide is used to treat glaucoma in dogs and cats. Although it can be effective it can also have a high occurrence of serious side effects in pets, including but not limited to an electrolyte imbalance, seizures, bone marrow depression, liver problems and other issues - so usage should be taken seriously and risks discussed thoroughly with your veterinarian before treatment.
