Household Cleaners and Disinfectants
An Important Note: never use household cleaners such as
bleach, tomlyn or sporicidin directly on your pet
Fungal infections can be very contagious, some believe that ringworm spores can survive on shedded hairs for
up to eighteen months. Theoretically ringworm, athlete's foot and other infections can be spread from one animal
to another or to their human counterparts through shared bedding, living areas and clothing. Although many
cleaners may kill virus or bacteria they may not necessarily kill fungus. If you or your pet have been infected
with a contagious fungal infection you will want to vacuum often and keep any shed hair picked up quickly. Until the
infection has been cured you will
also want to avoid direct contact as much as possible and wash affected clothing and bedding in bleach or another
product that will kill the fungus in the wash cycle.
Kills 99.99% of viruses, bacteria and fungi for the ultimate in disinfecting.
Multi-action formula attacks key structures within the micro-organisms to provide control
of canine parvovirus, rabies, foot and mouth disease and more. Biodegradable and
safe for use in grooming shops, veterinary clinics, kennels and pet shops.
Sporicidin is an industrial cleanser designed to be gentler than some of the other mold and fungus fighting products,
some of which can contain suspected carcinogens.
It smells a little like Chloraseptic throat spray and is said to contain a similar active ingredient. We decided to
use sporicidin for our own home when our dogs contracted ringworm from another dog. We also used it in
small amounts in our laundry wash to help kill the fungus when we did not want to use something as strong as bleach.
You may have to purchase this product from an industrial supply company and it can be expensive -
but we found it well worth the cost.
