About Allergies, Antihistamines and Allergy Pet Medications for Animals
Allergies occur when the body has an adverse reaction to a
provocative agent, i.e., pollen or dust, also known as an allergen.
In response to the allergen invading the body,
the immune system releases histamine. Ironically, it is the histamine being released that causes
the adverse symptoms also known as allergies. In people, allergies
are often characterized by respiratory symptoms such as
sneezing, wheezing, runny eyes and coughing. However, animal
allergies usually manifest themselves with a different set of symptoms. For instance, dog
allergy symptoms to look for include face rubbing, chronic recurrent ear infections, and,
excessive licking and chewing of the paws. Allergies
can sometimes worsen and occur more frequently as your pet ages.
Doctors and veterin- arians often prescribe
antihistamines to help control production of the histamines causing the allergies,
thereby, hopefully reducing the annoying allergies they can cause.
