What Is Atopica

Atopica is a prescription required, pet medication designed to help provide itch relief for dogs and cats, itching that is often caused by allergies to the environment around them. Atopica is designed to suppress the part of the immune system that reacts to allergens. It is available in soft capsule form for dogs and in a liquid variety for cats. There is also a generic alternative to Atopica for pets known as Cyclosporine A.

Dog Skin Allergy Problems And Treatment Options

Pets often get allergy problems just like people do, but their issues are often different than ours. Instead of coughing and sneezing their allergy symptoms usually show up in the form of ear and skin problems such as itchy skin or inflamed red ears. Treatment may include suppressing the immune system's reaction, as is the case with atopica, or, treatment may include easing the symptoms with skin and ear medications, antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, steroids or even antibiotics.

An Itch Relief Alternative To Steroids

In the past, veterinarians often treated allergy related skin problems in pets with corticosteroids to help reduce secondary itching and inflammation. Atopica offers an alternative to steroid pet medications which can often have long term side effects.

Cyclosporine A - The Generic Atopica Alternative For Dogs

Cyclosporine capsules are the generic alternative to atopica for dogs. Generics are often a great way to save money, however, wether or not you will save money by using cyclosporine instead of atopica will depend on where you buy your cyclosporine. Atopica at a pharmacy offering low prices may actually be cheaper. It is also important to know that dosage options differ slightly between the two, Atopica is available in 10mg, 25mg, 50mg and 100mg, whereas Cyclosporine is only available in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. In general, packaging and manufacturing processes can differ between brand name meds and generic medication. The advantages of buying generic will vary by medicine, it is always best to visit with your veterinarian to determine what will work best for your dog or cat.

Atopica For Dogs - A Summary Of Online Reviews

Many pet owners felt that Atopica was the first pet medication ever to provide their pets with itch relief and a reduction in dog skin allergy problems. In other words, nothing else they had tried in the past had worked until they tried Atopica. Past failures for some dogs included allergy shots, steroids, special shampoos, etc. One pet owner went so far as to describe the med as "magic" and another called it a "miracle". One complaint however, by some pet owners was that it was sometimes hard to get the dog to take the pill and that the capsules needed to be stored within a certain temperature. Some mentioned the fact that it was expensive but most felt it was worth it. We personally know one dog, a bichon, that has done very well with atopica. Steroids had been tried unsuccessfully, but cyclosporine seems to be providing nice relief from the itching and subsequent licking, sores and hot spots.

Interactions & Side Effects
A lot of pet owners like the idea of using Atopica instead of steroids as a way to avoid the effects of steroids. However, Atopica can have side effects too, including but not limited to loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. Potential adverse drug interactions and immune system suppression are also possible, so you will want to visit thoroughly with your veterinarian and follow their directions carefully and adjust the dosage accordingly as they prescribe.
Dosage
Dosage options differ slightly between the two meds, Atopica is available in 10mg, 25mg, 50mg and 100mg options where as Cyclosporine is only available in 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg.
