Are Flea and Tick Collars for You and Your Pet?
Flea collars can be a very powerful tool in the fight against fleas and ticks. However, they're not
for every pet in every situation. If you have more than one pet and they will be playing together
and "mouthing" each other they could ingest the collar ingredients or even the collar itself. Also,
if you or your children will be handling
your pet you could get the ingredients on your hands or
in your mouth and this would not be good either.
In such situations,
you may wish to consider
a monthly topical spot on or
flavor tab flea control product.
However, there are times when flea tick collars can
be a very valuable tool, especially for pets spending most of their time outdoors.
Often, tick collars such as Preventic can be used
in conjunction with flea control products like Advantage and Program. We used to have a young standard poodle that we took
on horse back rides with us in the wilds in tick rich environments. What worked best for us was a
combination program. We applied the spot on flea and tick control product Frontline once a month and
when we took our dog on horseback rides we placed the Preventic collar around her neck for the duration
of the adventure. Afterwards, we placed the collar in a zip lock bag to save for the next ride.
This plan always worked well for us and our poodle.
Many tick and flea collars are water resistant too,
however, resistant is the key word here, they are seldom actually water proof and
should be removed for bathing and may not last as long on dogs frequently in the water
As with any insecticide products, sensitivities, adverse drug interaction and side effects can occur.
Many collars are not suitable for debilitated, aged, nursing, pregnant or medicated pets.
In addition, some collars are suitable for dogs, but have ingredients that should never be used on cats.
And, most collars are not suitable for pets three months and under.
Please visit thoroughly with your veterinarian regarding all your pet's health products and
their very specific situation. When applying the collar,
always cut off excess portions, avoid getting collar dust in the eyes or mouth, properly dispose
of waste and wash hands thoroughly after handling.
