Oral Heartworm Comparisons - Flavor Tabs, Pills and Tablets
There are a wide variety of heartworm preventatives available today. Many pet owners prefer topically applied
versions but others find these varieties messy and annoying. There are actually several oral heartworm products
for these individuals to choose from although active ingredients and targeted parasites will differ. Several are
for use in dogs only and should never be given to cats. Some brands such as Heartgard make varieties for both
cats and dogs so if your buying for a feline you'll want to make sure you are not buying the canine variety
by accident. Most heartworm products labeled "Plus" contain Pyrantel which should not be given to cats.
For your dog, Heartgard makes a "Plus" product that is beef based, and Tri-Hart and Iverhart make one
that is pork flavored. This gives dog owners a second option if their pet is allergic to one or the other.
