Lens Opacity & Cataracts - Cause & Definition

Generally speaking, the eye lens of a dog or cat is made from water and proteins which are called crystalline proteins. The proteins are arranged in a special manner so that the lens will be clear. Aging, trauma, nutritional deficiencies, disease, even too much exposure to the sun can cause the proteins in the eye to degenerate and break down. Damaged proteins in the lens can clump together which can lead to lens opacity.
The term lens opacity is used to describe a condition of the lens where the eye lens becomes noticeably opaque, cloudy or discolored resulting in impaired vision or blindness. Lens opacity is sometimes used as a very simple definition of a cataract.

OcluVet Eye Drops For Dogs and Cats

OcluVet eye drops are a nutritional lubricant for the eye designed to help repair and maintain damaged proteins. Beginning early in life, the eye tries to protect itself utilizing a system that includes the power of antioxidants to help fight degeneration. OcluVet contains six nutritional ingredients including powerful antioxidants and vitamins necessary to help those antioxidants do their job. A job which includes attacking harmful free radicals, stabilizing cells and detoxification to help reduce potential degradation of healthy proteins. The ingredients in OcluVet also help promote repair on proteins that have already been damaged.
Depending on your specific dog or cat's eye condition, it's cause and where they are in their treatment stage, their veterinarian may prescribe OcluVet drops only once every 48 hours or as often as three times a day. Although Ocluvet does not require a prescription, always visit with your veterinarian to determine if ocluvet is right for your particular pet.
There have been two clinical studies conducted on OcluVet which included input from multiple veterinary hospitals. Test results were positive with over 80% of pets tested seeing a reduction in lens opacity over an eight week period.

Summary Of Online Reviews

In general the reviews from pet owners regarding ocluvet have been mostly positive with one pet owner even calling the drops a "miracle drug". The majority commented that they either saw a significant improvement in eyesight or at least a slow down in the progression of the disease. A few mentioned they particularly noticed its beneficial effects and vision benefits when playing catch with their dog. A few complained about OcluVet being too expensive but there were also those that felt it was still a more cost effective alternative to the expensive option of cataract surgery. And some had actually canceled already planned surgeries after successfully trying the medication. There was a very small minority of pet owners that commented they felt the product did not make any difference at all, positive or negative. Others mentioned the drops came out too liberally or dribbled down the side of the bottle and recommended to be careful not to let them spill and waste. Hopefully the manufacturer will eventually fix this problem.

Free Radicals
And Antioxidants
Free radicals are unstable molecules in the body some times produced during the bonding and splitting processes of molecules. They can be produced simply by the body's normal processes or they may be the result of the body's attempt to fight viruses, bacteria, toxins or even pollutants. Free radicals like to steal atoms from healthy cells in order to become more stable themselves. Only problem is now the previously healthy cell has now become unstable too. Consequently free radical activity can lead to cell damage and other health problems. But antioxidants can help with free radical issues, antioxidants donate one of their own atoms to the free radical, making the free radical a once again stable molecule. The beauty of antioxidants is that they can do this without becoming unstable molecules themselves.
