This episode of The Resourceful Pet Care Podcast … A Product Review of Frontline Flea and Tick Control … is brought to you by DiscountPetMedicines.com, it is an independent broadcast and product review and is not affiliated in any way with Frontline or Merial Pharmaceuticals.

Frontline is a topical non prescription flea and tick control pet product made available by the well established pharmaceutical company Merial. Frontline is available in two varieties.

The original variety is known as Frontline, Original Frontline or Frontline Top Spot … the second variety available to pet owners is known simply as Frontline Plus. Both varieties are available for either dogs or cats and they all contain the ingredient Fipronil. Fipronil works to kill adult fleas and ticks, however, Fipronil does not prevent flea eggs and larvae from developing into adults.

That's where the newer variety Frontline Plus earns it stripes, Frontline Plus also contains an additional ingredient, one that the original Frontline does not have … this additional ingredient is known as - S-Methoprene. … S-Methroprene works to control fleas in the egg and larvae stages too, consequently Frontline Plus not only kills adult fleas but it helps break the life cycle in the development stages as well.

You might be surprised to find that many of the other popular flea control products available on the market today do not offer this kind of comprehensive protection, but rather they target the flea in either the adult OR developing stage but not in both. Targeting the adults only allows fleas to hatch and targeting the developing stages only allows adults to continue to pose a health issue for your dog or cat. In other words, they simply do not take care of the fleas in all the life cycle stages, not like Frontline Plus can.

Since Frontline Plus has an extra ingredient that Top Spot does not have, it can be just a little more expensive at times … but we find the extra, comprehensive protection that we get from Frontline Plus worth the slightly extra cost.

The original Frontline formula is also available in a spray-on variety too. Some pet owners prefer the spray on because it can be a more cost effective way to treat multiple pets. However,it can be messy and a lot more trouble to apply than the simple spot on application of the other varieties … Frontline Spray requires wearing gloves and following strict safety guidelines. It is also important to note that the spray version of frontline is not recommended for individuals who suffer from asthma or respiratory illness as some people can have an adverse reaction to the spray.

All Frontline Products are designed to be quick acting, long lasting and water resistant - even after bathing. However, for maximum success and effectiveness they recommend not bathing your dog or cat within three days before or after applying frontline.

Frontline is designed to kill 100% of your pet's fleas within 18 hours of application and 100% of its ticks within 48 hours, Frontline should be properly applied every thirty days for effective results. Frontline Plus is what we use on our own dogs and sometimes on our cats as well, we like the comprehensive flea and tick control it provides. We've tried a few other flea and tick control products over the years, mostly just out of curiosity, but in the end we always come back to Frontline.
