Free Radicals -
Unstable molecules produced by the body through the bonding and splitting process of molecules.
As "unstable" molecules, free radicals will attempt to become more stable by
"stealing" an electron from a neighboring healthy cell. Unfortunately, when an electron is stolen from the
healthy cell, the healthy cell will now be damaged and unstable itself.
Some free radical production is a normal body process, and on occasion, the
body’s immune system will purposefully create them to neutralize threatening viruses and bacteria.
However, excessive free-radical production or build up can cause cell damage and other ill effects.
There are several factors that can cause excess free radical build up in the body, including the normal aging process,
pollution and toxins in the environment.
Antioxidant -
Beneficial molecules that help rid the body of harmful free radicals. A free radical can cause damage to previously healthy cells by stealing an
electron from them. Antioxidants like Vitamins E and C,
neutralize free radicals by giving them one of their own electrons, therefore making the free radical "stable"
and ending its need to steal an electron from a neighboring healthy cell.
Antioxidants themselves don’t become free radicals or unstable molecules by
donating an electron because
