Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim Tablets
Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim antibiotic tablets, also known as SMZ-TMP or trimethoprim sulfa is
sometimes prescribed for cats and dogs. It is a prescription med and
is the available generic alternative to
the brand name antibiotic Bactrim often used to treat a broad range of infections
in people as well, including "traveler's diarrhea".
Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim meds are designed to work by inhibiting the production of folic acid.
Your veterinarian might prescribe it to treat certain respiratory, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal infections,
including those caused by specific protozoa issues.
Available in regular and double strength tablets, SMZ-TMP meds are usually given once daily
and should given exactly as directed by your pet's veterinarian.
