Cushings Diseases In Dogs
Cushings disease in canines, also called hyperadrenocorticism, is a condition that results in an
overproduction of the cortisone hormone cortisol. Like cortisone meds, the cortisol can actually help relieve
the symptoms of health conditions such as allergies or inflammatory arthritis. However, the side effects of
excess cortisol keep this from being a good thing - side effects which can include suppression of the immune
system, diabetes, kidney failure and many other serious conditions.

About Vetoryl Meds (Trilostane) For Canine Cushings Disease
Vetoryl, is a newer FDA approved pet medication designed to help control cushings diseases in dogs and is used to treat
both pituitary dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) and adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocortism (ADH) canine cushing's diseases.
If your veterinarian is going to start your canine on a Vetoryl regimen, make sure your veterinarian knows all the
medications and supplements your dog has taken during the last six months, as well as health conditions your dog has
had past or present. If your dog has been on Lysodren, your veterinarian
may wish to wait a period of time, possibly a month or more, before starting him on vetoryl. It is also
important to let your pet's veterinarian know if your dog has any kind of kidney or liver disease. There are also
medications such as enalapril, ketoconazole, ace inhibitors and potassium meds that can cause adverse reactions when combined with
Vetoryl.
Vetoryl is a promising new medication for dog cushings because it is believed to have fewer and less sever side effects than
lysodren (mitotane). However, side effects are possible including but not limited to severe allergic reactions,
a decrease in appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, severe depression, bloody diarrhea or collapse.
When giving Vetoryl, veterinarians usually recommend giving it with food, it is also important not to open up the
vetoryl capsules and always wash your hands after handling them.
And it is advised to avoid handling vetoryl capsules if you are pregnant.
It is best to store vetoryl at room temperature in a tightly sealed, light resistant, child proof container.
Visit thoroughly with your veterinarian regarding risks and procedures before starting your dog on a vetoryl regimen.
